Preparing for our first "Tramp"
We came to NZ to walk and explore the great outdoors... perhaps slightly underestimating the weather and cold this time of year. Sitting in a wee cafe in Masterton, doing the last bits of preparation before doing lake Waikaremoana in two days time. Read the weather forecast (which in NZ has an entire broadsheet newspaper page devoted to it) and preparing ourselves mentally for the likely freezing and wet conditions we may be encountering on-route. Four days of walking and three nights in huts, itching to get going! Tooled up with the latest in thermal undergarments – Icebreakers. These promise to be the best available, and are advertised with straplines such as “I wore mine for 41 days in a row and they didn't smell at all”, they've got to be good. A little concerned that they took longer to dry than a pair of jeans however, even though they are promised to be fast drying, we shall see! Just about to head out to stock up on dried pasta meals, porridge and “scroggin” (trail mix)... let's see how we'll report after the tramp!
