South Island New Zealand was almost Sud Nouvelle Zelande by four days... and there is still a certain Frenchness about the wee town where it could have all taken place. A group of French settlers landed here back in the day, but didn't bring their flag with them – when the Brits heard of this there was a quick dash for the Union flag to claim it for Her (or his) Majesty!
