And of course, there is the eclectic mix of characters that frequent them too... such as the people who have just completed an expedition above the bushline and seek recognition by loudly and repeatedly saying outloud to no-one in particular how hot it would be in the hut at night, and that we wouldn't need heating... But for the most, really nice, down to earth people from all walks of life!

Backcountry Huts
Backcountry Huts are one of the most fabulous features of the New Zealand outdoor experience. For the fee of NZ$60 you can stay for a full six months in NZ's system of backcountry huts. OK, they're not luxury accommodation, but there are over 1,000 to choose from, they're all different, but many have nice wood fires supplied and decent bunks too... they can get busy, but also they can be empty, and you can have them to yourselves.
