How to dig out your Land Rover

In an attempt to demonstrate to Celine how to un-stick a Rover, I deliberately decided to drive into a ditch and get the back wheel well and truly embedded in the soft mud, immersing the back door well into the mud also. Honestly, this was done purely as a demonstration and to test our ability during trying moments about 15 miles from the nearest settlement....

So it was out with the bumper jack, spade and off with the duck boards from the roof. In the manual, the number one rule about recovery from being stuck is don't get stuck in the first place (bad ground reading on my part, oops, I admitted it!!!). First of all, dig down until you find the bottom of your Rover, then a bit more to squeeze in a duck board and then your jack, not forgetting to dig a trench for the lever to work too! Then jack the vehicle very carefully – there's a lot of weight and a lot of soft ground. When the wheel is just about fully out of the ground, and depending on the size of the hole, either just shove the duckboard under the wheel, or as in our case, use a handy piece of pre-cut turf to add some more base to the hole. Gently lower the Rover, run like crazy to the cab before it sinks again, diff lock on and drive it clear. Oh yes, the number one rule, just watch where you're driving and don't get stuck in the first place!
