Goose Green, San Carlos and the fallen

Back from our surveys and a short stop in Stanley before heading up camp again. This time we'd actually managed to hire a car (our gangsta style Pajero with mirrored out windows) and headed out of town to San Carlos where we were staying in a lovely self catering house right on Blue Beach, overlooking the waters where so much action took place in 1982.

Visited the small British War Cemetery and paid our respects to the fallen. Visited memorials to battles and Colonel H Jones on Goose Green, visited the old PoW sheds where Argentine troops were held after the surrender. Looking over the land it's hard to imagine all that took place here, and how the place must have been during the South Atlantic winter. It was 6 degrees when we visited the landing beaches at San Carlos, and that was mid afternoon in the summer. One can have nothing but respect and admiration for all those who did their duty.

Occasionally in camp there are still signs of the conflict, such as the remains of an Argentine helicopter of the drop tank we found on a beach during our surveys. And of course, in 1982 there were no roads from San Carlos to Stanley, it was a 17 hour Rover ride or a long yomp over very rough terrain.
